If you are familiar with UWC you will almost certainly be familiar with Shelby Davis, UWC's long time supporter and founder of the Davis-UWC Scholars Programme. Over the years Shelby Davis has supported UWC to do many wonderful things through his thoughtful investment. Shelby has now issued a challenge to the UWC community to take ownership of UWC’s future sustainability by committing to become regular donors.
All UWC schools and colleges are now participating in the Davis IMPACT Challenge, with Shelby Davis having extended the full $1m match to UWC Thailand and UWC ISAK Japan in September 2017. In order to get the ball rolling Shelby has committed a gargantuan $17,000,000! That is one million US dollars for every school or college in the UWC family. To activate the matched funding, each college needs to increase its number of donors, including alumni, parents, friends and family, after which each individual gift will be matched at 100% for a new donor and 50% for a gift from an existing donor.
Nine colleges successfully reached the full $1m match, with a total $10.9m being distributed to the 15 colleges at the end of the first year of the challenge. August 2016 saw six colleges go into the second year of the challenge and were successful in unlocking USD $1.5m of match funding at the end of the period in July 2017. During the second year, Waterford Kamhlaba UWC of Southern Africa inspired their alumni, friends and family to give through many different initiatives allowing them to unlock the full USD $1m, thus completing the challenge. Seven schools and colleges will now go into the third year of the challenge (UWC Changshu, UWC Costa Rica, UWC ISAK Japan, Li Po Chun UWC of Hong Kong, UWC Mahindra, UWC Red Cross Nordic, UWC Thailand) and will benefit from the remaining USD $4.5m available for eligible gifts.

The best way to participate in the challenge is to get in touch with your college and discuss setting up a regular donation. Regular giving will ensure numbers of donors continue to grow and the college can continue to claim matching gifts. More information on how to give including different methods of giving and tax efficiency can be found at "donate" below.
The cut off point for having donations matched for the third year is July 31 2018 (final banking day in July) – funds must have reached the college bank account by this date to be eligible. If your donation reaches the college after July 31 it will be counted in the next matching period which runs August 1, 2018 - July 31, 2019. Gift matching continues in annual cycles until each college has reached the $1m target.
But don't stop there! Let Shelby Davis know that you appreciate his support if you have been inspired by the challenge. You can use the form below to submit you message which will be added to the Wall of Thanks or to a compilation of messages to be presented to Shelby Davis.
Lastly, spread the word to your fellow alumni, parents or other UWC connections. It is through a collective effort that we will meet the challenge to ensure that education remains a force for peace and a sustainable future!
